Yieldco

Finance

Definition

A Yieldco is a dividend-focused public company created to own operating renewable energy assets (such as solar farms, wind farms, or other infrastructure) that generate steady cash flows. The Yieldco model allows developers or parent companies to spin off mature projects into a separate entity which then pays out most of its available cash as dividends to shareholders. Investors are attracted to Yieldcos for their predictable yields (dividend payments) and exposure to the renewable energy sector. The Yieldco can also use funds from equity investors to acquire additional assets from the sponsor or market, fueling growth. Essentially, a Yieldco provides an investment vehicle to earn stable returns from long-term contracted clean energy projects, similar to how REITs work for real estate.
