Virtual Net Metering

Policy

Definition

Virtual Net Metering (VNM) is a policy mechanism that allows the benefits of net metering to be shared among multiple customers or accounts, even if they are not all connected to the same physical solar system. It’s often used in community solar projects or multi-tenant buildings. For example, a single solar array on an apartment building can allocate credits to each tenant’s electric bill based on their share of ownership or subscription. Or a community solar farm’s output can be virtually allocated to different subscribers’ utility accounts. VNM ensures that people who invest in or subscribe to a portion of a solar project can receive bill credits as if the panels were on their own roof. This broadens access to solar savings for those who cannot install panels on their property.
