Utility-Scale Solar

Technology

Definition

Utility-scale solar refers to large solar power plants that generate electricity to feed into the grid, similar to traditional power stations, rather than powering individual homes or businesses directly. These installations are usually in the multi-megawatt range, comprising thousands of panels spread over many acres (solar farms). Utility-scale solar projects often have power purchase agreements with utilities or operate as merchant plants selling into wholesale electricity markets. Because of their size, they benefit from economies of scale, making them one of the most cost-effective forms of solar energy. Utilities integrate these projects to meet renewable energy mandates and decarbonize their energy mix. Utility-scale solar, sometimes combined with energy storage, plays a significant role in replacing fossil fuel generation on the grid.
