Smart Grid

Technology

Definition

A smart grid is an electricity network that uses digital communications, automation, and advanced control systems to monitor and manage the flow of electricity from all generation sources to end-users. Unlike the traditional grid, a smart grid can dynamically respond to changes in power supply and demand. It integrates renewable energy sources, uses smart meters and sensors to provide real-time data, and can automatically reroute power or call on distributed resources (like home batteries or electric vehicles) to maintain balance and reliability. For consumers and utilities, the smart grid enables features like time-of-use pricing, better outage detection and response, and more efficient operation. It is essential for maximizing the use of solar and wind energy, as it can handle their variability through improved forecasting, control, and distributed energy resource management.
