Operational Expenditure (OpEx)

Finance

Definition

Operational Expenditure (OpEx) refers to the ongoing costs of operating and maintaining a project or business. In the context of a solar or wind project, OpEx includes expenses like maintenance and repairs, inverter replacements, land lease payments, insurance, labor for operations, and any other regular costs needed to keep the project running after it’s built. OpEx is distinct from the one-time Capital Expenditure (CapEx) of building the project. Keeping OpEx low is important for maximizing the project’s profitability, as high operating costs can erode the margins from selling electricity. Investors closely examine OpEx assumptions in financial models to gauge long-term performance.
