Definition

A microgrid is a localized group of electricity sources and loads that can disconnect and operate independently from the main power grid. It often includes distributed energy resources like solar panels, wind turbines, and battery storage, combined with control systems. Microgrids can supply resilient power to a campus, community, or remote area, maintaining electricity during broader grid outages (island mode) or reducing costs by generating locally. They enhance energy security and reliability, and are increasingly used for integrating renewables at a community scale, as they can balance generation and demand within the microgrid.
