Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)

Policy

Definition

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 is a significant United States federal law that, among other things, provides substantial funding and incentives for clean energy and climate-related initiatives. It extends and expands investment tax credits and production tax credits for renewable energy projects (like solar, wind, and energy storage), incentivizes domestic manufacturing of clean energy components, and supports electric vehicles and energy efficiency. For solar investors and developers, the IRA offers longer-term certainty on tax credits (such as a 30% Investment Tax Credit for solar) and bonus credits for projects meeting certain criteria (e.g., using US-made materials or being located in low-income communities), thereby boosting the financial attractiveness of sustainable energy investments.
