General
An Independent Power Producer (IPP) is a private entity (not a public utility) that generates electricity for sale, typically selling to utilities or end-users through power purchase agreements. IPPs develop, own, and operate power plants - in the renewable sector, these are often solar farms, wind farms, or hydro projects. They assume the project’s financial and operational risks and profits. IPPs are key players in expanding renewable energy capacity, as they leverage private investment to build new generation and often specialize in clean energy projects, selling the electricity either into the grid or directly to large customers.
