Hyperscaler

Definition

A hyperscaler is a company that operates computing and cloud infrastructure at enormous scale through a global network of highly automated data centers. Major cloud and artificial intelligence platforms are hyperscalers; a hyperscale data center is one of the large facilities that supports their services. In the energy industry, hyperscalers matter because their data centers can add large, concentrated electricity loads that require continuous, reliable power, strong grid connections, and substantial cooling. Hyperscalers may procure electricity through utility service, physical or virtual power purchase agreements, renewable energy certificates, and investments in onsite generation or battery storage. Their demand can accelerate new solar, wind, storage, generation, substation, and transmission projects, while also creating interconnection and grid planning challenges. For energy investors, a hyperscaler can be a creditworthy long-term electricity buyer and a source of durable load growth. Project quality still depends on the contract structure, the buyer’s credit, delivery location, hourly power needs, interconnection timing, and whether new energy supply and grid capacity can be built when the data center needs them.
