Gigawatt (GW)

Measurement

Definition

A gigawatt (GW) equals 1,000 megawatts (one billion watts) of power. Gigawatts measure the capacity of very large power plants or the total electrical capacity of regions or countries. National renewable energy targets and grid scales are often expressed in gigawatts; for instance, a country might aim to install 100 GW of solar capacity. One GW of solar can power hundreds of thousands of homes under typical conditions.
