Definition

A General Partner (GP) in renewable energy investing is the entity that manages a limited partnership or investment fund, making investment decisions, overseeing operations, and bearing unlimited liability for the partnership's obligations. The GP is responsible for sourcing, evaluating, and managing solar, wind, or other clean energy projects within the fund. In exchange for their management responsibilities, the GP typically receives management fees (usually 1-2% of committed capital annually) and carried interest (a share of profits above the preferred return). The GP's expertise in renewable energy development, project finance, and operations is crucial to the fund's success, as they make all major decisions regarding project acquisitions, financing structures, and exit strategies.
