Decommissioning Plan

Regulation

Definition

A decommissioning plan is a strategy and set of requirements for safely removing a renewable energy installation (such as a solar farm or wind farm) from service at the end of its life and restoring the site. The plan outlines how equipment (panels, turbines, batteries) will be dismantled, recycled or disposed of, and how land will be rehabilitated (e.g., removing foundations and replanting vegetation). Many jurisdictions require decommissioning plans (and associated bonds or financial assurance) as part of project approval to ensure funds are available to clean up the site and prevent abandonment of renewable installations.
