Commercial and Industrial (C&I)

General

Definition

Commercial and Industrial (C&I) refers to a customer segment in the energy market that includes businesses, factories, office buildings, retail establishments, schools, hospitals, and other non-residential electricity users. C&I customers typically have higher energy consumption than residential users and often have more complex energy needs, including demand for reliable power, specific voltage requirements, and cost management strategies. In renewable energy, the C&I segment represents a significant market opportunity for solar installations, energy storage systems, and clean energy procurement. C&I customers often pursue renewable energy through on-site solar installations, power purchase agreements (PPAs), or virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) to reduce energy costs and meet sustainability goals. Many corporations have committed to 100% renewable energy targets, driving demand for clean energy solutions. C&I renewable energy projects are typically larger than residential installations but smaller than utility-scale projects, ranging from hundreds of kilowatts to several megawatts. The C&I market is crucial for renewable energy growth as these customers can make long-term commitments and have the financial capacity to invest in clean energy infrastructure.
