24/7 Carbon-Free Energy is the practice of matching each hour of a consumer’s electricity use with carbon-free generation in the same timeframe (and often the same grid region), rather than annual REC matching. It typically relies on sub-hourly metering, granular certificates (GCs), and hourly market data to verify time/location claims. Benefits include higher emissions impact, additionality signals for new clean capacity, and alignment with corporate decarbonization and regulatory disclosure. Examples: Google and Microsoft pilots, EnergyTag frameworks, utility hourly CFE programs.
